In detail...
A couple were visiting some friends in Spain. The husband fell and seriously broke his leg and spent an initial 4 days in hospital.
Unfortunately the husband required another operation and a further 15 days admitted to hospital. These medical costs were covered by the E111.
The problems:
* not speaking Spanish, it was not always possible to communicate problems (what's the Spanish for bed-pan? )
The solution:
* the host family was able to organise family and friends so that someone was in hospital for most of the time
* the couple felt that it was necessary to reimburse certain incidental expenses (eg travel, meals, mobile 'phone calls etc)
* a wheelchair
* crutches
* 4 'plane tickets (3 for the husband's leg, still in plaster)
* private ambulances to the airport in Spain (and from the UK airport to the couple's home city)
