In detail...
The member was photographing in a nature reserve. Without realising it, the member's footsteps had woken up a sleeping buffalo about 20 yards away. The Cape Buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals alive. Lone males that have been kicked out of the herd can be more dangerous than a lion when confronted.
The fearsome buffalo immediately charged, throwing the member into the air, returning and charging again. By the third attack the member was unconscious and had almost been crushed to death.
When the member's family informed BUPA International of the incident, the medical insurance claim was organised. The member's life was in the balance because of deep wounds caused by the buffalo's horns, other injuries, renal and liver failure. The member 'flat-lined' three times.
For two weeks the member was in intensive care and another two months in hospital - hospital treatment would have cost the member over £31,000 had there been no medical insurance. (This happened several years ago... so costs will have changed)
