In detail... The member was at home in a small Italian village but felt sharp pains in the chest. It became very difficult to breathe as the chest felt very restricted. The member was having a heart attack, fell to the floor, bruising legs and elbow. The member's spouse immediately called the Italian emergency services and first on the scene was the duty doctor at the local village hospital. The doctor called the hospital which arranged for an ambulance, however the hospital did not have the appropriate facilities. Whilst at the local hospital a staff member was trying to sort out the patient's payment details. The patient's spouse 'phoned BUPA International and within minutes a fax arrived, in Italian, accepting all hospital charges. The patient was transferred to a larger hospital which carried out emergency procedures and managed to get the patient stable. Eleven days the patient was allowed to return to the local hospital for recovery. Regarding the fax in Italian the member commented "The hospital staff were very impressed, no other insurance company had ever gone that extra mile before. I was very impressed as well, especially as the fax was in Italian. It made me and my spouse's life much easier at the time." The member was then discharged with a prescription for various medications and an appointment to see a cardiologist in the following 2 weeks. The member is now fit and well.
