In detail...
The member was bitten by a mosquito in Guyana and soon after experienced sever pain, pounding headaches and excruciating pain in the lower spine and calf muscles. The member constantly felt tired and exhausted doing the smallest tasks.
After a month the member suffered a very high temperature, swelled lips and red welts appeared on the body and became itchy. The member visited a doctor who took blood samples and prescribed drugs to reduce the fever and pain. A potential severe malaria diagnosis was suspected.
BUPA International was contacted and an evacuation aircraft was placed on standby to airlift the member to the nearest hospital if it was found that the member had malaria.
The malaria test proved negative. The member had contracted Dengue Fever, which is not usually severe and resolves on its own - although recovery may take several weeks.
A BUPA International representative subsequently kept in contact to check on the member's progress.
